Step Back

Sometimes brain fog and dissociation make it so difficult for trauma survivors to hear what another person is actually saying.  Their words morph into an altered reality from some other time and place.  It wreaks havoc on relationships, no matter how strong the love.

Yesterday I heard your words.  Then I made them fit my need.
Now I see how I preferred to pick and choose the parts I could use.
It’s time to
Step back.  Time is a-comin’ when the big view will come clear.
Step back.  Time is a-comin’ when the clouds will disappear.
I’ve been walkin’ in the mist, bumpin’ into raindrops.
Callin’ to insist I’ll trade in at the pawn shop.
Now I know I switched my over easy order at the truck stop.

Last week you told your side, but I ignored my tiny twinge
Of hesitation.  I denied what I knew was for me the truth.

When I find my vision blurred.  When you speak but all I hear
Are echoes of some other words. That’s the cue for my rendezvous.
